From Banff, it’s about a 45 minute drive.
My Experience: The highlight of my trip was definitely driving the Icefields Parkway. The scenic drive offered some of the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen. Stopping at the Columbia Icefield and walking on the Athabasca Glacier was an unforgettable experience. My favorite scenic stop was Peyto Lake. The vibrant blue color of the lake set against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains was simply mesmerizing. Due to time constraints, Peyto Lake was our last stop before turning around to head back to Lake Louise. I highly recommend using the Guide Along app for an informative and entertaining journey along the Parkway.

When Should I Go?

Banff is a year-round destination, each season offering its own unique charm:
- Spring (April to June): Ideal for witnessing the thawing of lakes and blooming wildflowers. It’s a quieter time with fewer crowds.
- Summer (July to August): Perfect for hiking, canoeing, and enjoying outdoor festivals. This is peak tourist season, so expect more visitors.
- Fall (September to November): Experience the stunning fall foliage and enjoy cooler temperatures. A great time for hiking and photography.
- Winter (December to March): A haven for winter sports enthusiasts. The snow-covered landscapes are magical, and the festive atmosphere is enchanting.
My Experience: We visited the first week of June, and it was the perfect time. The summer rush hadn’t hit yet, the lakes were thawed, and the weather was ideal for outdoor activities. It was warm during the day and pleasantly cool in the evenings. The trails were accessible, and the scenery was breathtaking without the large crowds.
What to Pack

Packing for Banff depends on the season, but here are some essentials:
- Layers: The weather can change rapidly, so pack layers to stay comfortable.
- Sturdy Hiking Boots: Essential for exploring trails and rugged terrain.
- Waterproof Jacket: For unpredictable weather and sudden rain showers.
- Swimsuit: Don’t miss out on the hot springs.
- Camera: To capture the stunning landscapes.
- Sunscreen and Sunglasses: The high altitude means stronger sun exposure.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated, especially during hikes.
My Experience: I found that layering was key to staying comfortable throughout the day. Morning hikes could be chilly, but by afternoon, I was down to my t-shirt. Hiking shoes were a must for me because of all the rugged trails. During the time we went, there was still some snow on some higher elevation trails. The hiking shoes definitely helped with grip.
